of Fairfield County is helping businesses fight back against cyber threats and attacks. They are helping businesses in the area learn how to spot and pin-point these attacks-

IBM has now jumped on the bandwagon with us urging small to middle market businesses to do the same – learn how to spot phishing and malware!

According to Huff Post/Reuters, IBM says a well funded gang of cyber criminals are using malware, phishing and phone calls to gain access to mid-size business organizations.. The scheme is called “Dyre Wolf” and is smaller than recent data breaches but indicates a higher level of sophistication in these attacks.

Note the attack approach-

1. Attackers send email with malware to as many company representatives as possible to infect their computers with malware through a variety of messaging

2. Once installed, if the employee access a bank website, they are presented with a fake screen saying the bank is offline and to call in.

3. When the employee calls the number, the cyber-criminal already knows which bank they think they are contacting and simply listens to the account information.

4. The cyber-criminal then initializes a large wire transfer from the employee or business account

Garry Feldman, President of U.S. Computer Connection ( www.uscomputer.com) said “Awareness is key – the answer is to be pro-active and employ sound practices that help you pinpoint these activities. We provide the tools to keep you pro-active, alert and ready – it’s a part of business continuity planning that cannot be overlooked.”

Michael O’Connor, CFO of SBWusa.com, said “Garry’s thought leadership and advancement of these types of activities are paramount for the local business community. We appreciate the guidance!” The Pentagon, Anthem and huge conglomerates get penetrated – no one is exempt but there needs to be awareness. Education on the key steps to pinpoint and spot these types of communities is crucial. Being prepared has never been more critical for businesses and the information they possess.

Feldman is in the news with Rep. Caroline Simmons, D-144 Stamford. Rep. Simmons is helping create a public-private partnership to address rising cyber-attacks to computers and looking for pathways to reduce the vulnerabilities of such attacks. The public-private partnership looks to advance awareness, provide training and use-case exercises. Although the bill is in primitive form, Rep. Simmons and Feldman are collaborating with other State Representatives providing thought leadership that creates a best-in-class program that can address such attacks. Rep. Simmons said “The increasing number of cyber-attacks and sophistication of such attacks demonstrate the need for better cyber defenses. Raising awareness and providing information to businesses and the public on how to defend against cyber-attacks and hacking incidents is critical to our economic security.”
